〜にもかかわらず — “Despite / In spite of / Nevertheless”

Used when the result is unexpected given the condition. More formal than 〜のに.

Structure: Noun / Verb (plain) / Adj + にもかかわらず + unexpected result

💡 Similar to 〜のに but more formal and literary.

雨あめにもかかわらず、試合しあいは行おこなわれた。 Despite the rain, the match was held. 　（繁中：儘管下雨，比賽仍照常舉行。）
一生懸命いっしょうけんめい勉強べんきょうしたにもかかわらず、試験しけんに落おちてしまった。 Despite studying hard, I failed the exam. 　（繁中：儘管拼命用功，還是考試不及格。）
高齢こうれいにもかかわらず、彼かれはマラソンを完走かんそうした。 Despite his advanced age, he completed the marathon. 　（繁中：儘管年事已高，他仍完成了馬拉松。）

医師いしの警告けいこくにもかかわらず、彼かれは喫煙きつえんをやめなかった。家族かぞくの説得せっとくにもかかわらず、その習慣しゅうかんを変かえようとしなかった。

Despite the doctor’s warnings, he didn’t quit smoking. Despite his family’s persuasion, he refused to change that habit.
