〜ならいざ知らず — “I don’t know about X (extreme case), but (in normal circumstances)…”

The speaker presents an exceptional/extreme case (X) as perhaps understandable, but then says the current situation is clearly different and unacceptable.

Structure: Noun + ならいざ知らず + main statement (negative/criticism)

Example Sentences

1. 子供こどもならいざ知しらず、大人おとながそんな言いい訳わけは通とおらない。 I don’t know about children, but an excuse like that won’t work for an adult. 　（繁中：小孩子倒也罷了，大人說這種藉口根本行不通。）

2. 昔むかしならいざ知しらず、今いまの時代じだいにそんな考かんがえは古ふるい。 I don’t know about the old days, but in this day and age, that kind of thinking is outdated. 　（繁中：過去倒也罷了，在這個年代，那種想法太過時了。）

3. 素人しろうとならいざ知しらず、プロプロがそんなミスをするとは。 That sort of mistake might be understandable for an amateur, but for a professional… 　（繁中：外行人倒也罷了，專業人士竟然犯這種錯誤……）

Reading

緊急事態きんきゅうじたいならいざ知しらず、平時へいじにおいてそのような権限けんげんの行使こうしは許ゆるされない。法ほうの下もとでの平等びょうどうは、いかなる例外れいがいも認みとめないのだ。

That exercise of authority might be acceptable in an emergency, but in peacetime it cannot be permitted. Equality under the law admits no exceptions.
