You have worked through 30 days of Japanese grammar from N3 foundations to N1 mastery. This final lesson reviews the most exam-critical patterns and gives you a strategy for test day.

N1 Grammar Quick Review

Exam Strategy for JLPT N1

📝 Section 1: Language Knowledge (Vocabulary/Grammar)

  • Time: ~110 minutes total
  • Grammar questions often test register (formal vs informal) and nuance
  • Watch for: かねない vs かねる, ざるを得ない (する → せざるを得ない), ものの vs けれども

📖 Section 2: Reading

  • Tip: Read the questions FIRST, then the passage
  • N1 passages use: formal register, abstract nouns, complex sentence structures
  • Key vocabulary in academic writing: 〜に基づいて、〜を踏まえ、〜をめぐって、〜に際し

👂 Section 3: Listening

  • Note-taking is allowed — jot down key numbers, names, and conditions
  • Focus on the QUESTION being asked, not every word
  • Watch for: discourse markers (しかし、一方、つまり、したがって)

Reading Passage

日本語能力試験にほんごのうりょくしけんのN1は、日本語にほんごを母語ぼごとしない学習者がくしゅうしゃにとって最高さいこうレベルの試験しけんにほかならない。この試験しけんに合格ごうかくするためには、語彙ごいや文法ぶんぽうの知識ちしきもさることながら、長文ちょうぶんを素早すばやく読よみ解とく能力のうりょくも必要ひつようだ。

The JLPT N1 is nothing other than the highest level exam for non-native Japanese learners. To pass this exam, not only knowledge of vocabulary and grammar goes without saying, but the ability to quickly read and comprehend long passages is also necessary.
